URL Cleaner: remove tracking from links
Strip utm_, fbclid, gclid and dozens of other tracking codes so you can share a clean, shorter link. It all runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
What gets removed
Tracking codes are the extra bits added after a ? in a link. They tell the website, its analytics or its ad network where your visit came from. The cleaner removes the common ones:
| Code | Added by | What it records |
|---|---|---|
utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content | Newsletters, social posts, ads, most marketing tools | Which campaign, email or post the click came from |
fbclid | Facebook and Instagram | A unique ID for that click, used for ad measurement |
gclid, gbraid, wbraid | Google Ads | Which ad was clicked |
msclkid | Microsoft Ads (Bing) | Which ad was clicked |
mc_cid, mc_eid | Mailchimp | Which email and, often, which subscriber |
igshid, igsh, si | Instagram, YouTube, Spotify share buttons | Who shared the link |
_hsenc, _hsmi, mkt_tok | HubSpot, Marketo emails | Which recipient clicked |
ttclid, twclid, li_fat_id | TikTok, X, LinkedIn ads | Which ad was clicked |
Normal parts of a link, such as a search term, a product ID or a page number, are left alone unless you tick Remove everything after ?.
Why clean a link before sharing it?
- Privacy. Some codes, such as share IDs and email IDs, can tie the link back to you or to the person who sent it to you.
- Shorter, tidier links. A clean link is easier to read, paste in a message, or print.
- Honest analytics. When you share a link that still has someone else's campaign code, your friends' visits get counted as part of that campaign.
- Easier checking. It's much easier to see the real website in a short, clean address. Spot something odd? Check where it goes.
Options explained
Unwrap redirect links pulls the real address out of wrappers such as google.com/url?q=, l.facebook.com/l.php?u=, Outlook Safe Links and out.reddit.com. Shorten Amazon product links turns a long product URL into the short /dp/ form. Remove #fragment drops the part after #, which usually jumps to a spot on the page or carries text-highlight data. Remove everything after ? strips every parameter. It's the most thorough option, but it can break links that need them, such as search results.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to remove tracking codes from a link?
Almost always. Codes like utm_source, fbclid and gclid only tell the website owner where a visit came from. Removing them doesn't change the page you land on. The rare exception is a link where a code is part of the page itself, which is why the tool only removes known tracking codes unless you choose "Remove everything after ?".
Does the URL Cleaner send my links anywhere?
No. Cleaning happens entirely in your browser. The links you paste never leave your device unless you choose "Check where it goes", which sends that one cleaned link to our link checker.
What does "Unwrap redirect links" do?
Google search results, Facebook, Outlook Safe Links, Reddit and others often wrap the real address inside their own redirect link, such as google.com/url?q=…. Unwrapping pulls out the real destination so you can share or check it directly.
Will shortening Amazon links remove an affiliate tag?
Yes. The short form keeps only the product code (for example amazon.ca/dp/B0ABC12345), so any affiliate or tracking tags are removed. Leave the box unticked if you want to keep them.
Can I clean many links at once?
Yes. Paste up to 200 links, one per line, and use "Copy all" to grab the cleaned list.
